The problem

JPCS had a diverse officer and student community, with many members coming from programs outside Information Technology and Computer Science. A highly technical or overly corporate visual identity could make the organization feel less approachable to students from different academic backgrounds.

Since the organization also planned events centered around engagement, community, and fun, its existing creative direction needed to better reflect that atmosphere.

The challenge was to create a visual identity that represented a technology-oriented organization without making it feel exclusive or intimidating.

The fix

I shifted the creative direction toward a more playful, youthful, and approachable branding style. Rather than relying on conventional corporate technology aesthetics, I explored expressive visual elements that better reflected the organization's personality and the kind of community it wanted to build.

My contributions included:

  • Brand Development: Established a visual direction that balanced the organization's technology-oriented identity with a more welcoming personality.

  • Visual Exploration: Incorporated playful graphic elements, expressive layouts, and approachable design treatments.

  • Creative Direction: Applied the branding across organizational announcements, campaigns, events, and social media publications.

  • Team Leadership: Guided junior creative officers and coordinated the production of visual materials.

  • Brand Consistency: Maintained a recognizable visual language across different organizational activities.

The result

Developed a more approachable visual identity that better reflected JPCS's diverse community and its emphasis on engaging student activities.

The branding provided a consistent creative direction for organizational publications and event materials while allowing the organization to communicate its identity in a way that felt more relatable to students from different academic backgrounds.

What I learned

This experience taught me that effective branding isn't always about looking polished or professional in the traditional sense. It's about understanding who you're designing for and making intentional decisions that reflect their interests, personalities, and experiences.

I learned to look beyond an organization's industry when developing its visual identity. Sometimes, making a brand more approachable means moving away from expected conventions and creating something that people can genuinely connect with.
